How to use texture in your living room

Adding texture to a living room is one of the best ways to make it feel cosy and luxurious, here’s how.

Read on for stylish living room tips and ideas no matter what size your room is.

Allow fabrics to do the talking

Fabrics add soft, interesting layers, and cosy textured details, in the form of curtains, rugs, blankets, throws, and cushions. Combine different textures together within your soft furnishings, from soft warm plush velvet, smooth to the touch or crushed velvet for an effect. And of course, leather and suede, real or faux, including mock croc and patent shiny finishes.

Use silk to add some shimmer, as well as richness, and different weight cottons and linens, along with wool, tweed and cashmere, which are all naturally inviting in a room.

Don’t forget you can also use fabrics on walls for special effect, and flock patterned wallpapers which are tactile and luxurious. Mix and match with matt and gloss surfaces as well as contrasting textures for interest and variety.

Such as this classic mid-century style Ella Faux Leather Armchair, upholstered in chocolate brown eco leather with a glistening gold metallic frame. Brown is in as a favourable trend this year, and being a natural colour so close to nature, any other colours of the spectrum look good against it. Great with a glass coffee table or wooden sideboard, offset with a lux fabric cushion and/or chunky knit throw.

Go for cosy, creamy white accent chairs and armchairs in boucle/teddy fabrics

Textures can be added in a monochromatic fashion using whites and creams. This gorgeous scallop shaped Cabot armchair is upholstered in a soft boucle fabric, and offers just the right amount of support, it really is the ultimate, luxurious accent chair. Scandinavian inspired with natural rubberwood legs, it’s on trend and gets full marks for adding full on sophistication and texture to your living room.

The made to order Moira 3 Seater Sofa is available in so many different fabric options, and beautiful, muted colours, such as Kensington Mink, Devon Jet, Devon Truffle, Teddy Ivory Plush Grey, Teddy Slate, and many more. Allowing you to select just the right texture and shade for your living room colour scheme. Made to order in the UK, and inspired by traditional French design, it’s quality at its finest.

Stools, footstools and ottomans

Stools, footstools and ottomans are another way to add texture to your living room, and we love these round Trillium Foldable Velvet Ottoman, upholstered in pink, blue or grey velvet. The fact that you can move them around, and that they have internal storage, is all the more worth it.

Add a velvet accent chair in a fabulous colour, such as the plush modern tub style Borchester Armchair, upholstered in Dusty Pink or Pine Green velvet with gold plated tripod legs. Velvet is always alluring in a room setting as well as ultra cosy to sit on.

The Leo chair is a flexible furniture item, as it looks good anywhere, and is available in a Mustard or Seal Grey luxurious soft velvet.

Incorporate natural elements

Add plants, high and low, on the floor, and shelves and on the mantlepiece. Let nature have a starring role, and bring natural, organic elements with different leaf textures into your space. Embrace the irregular, and the rough with the smooth, group together different plants which look great against one another and bring colour to plain walls, nooks and crannies.

Add texture to the walls

Experiment with different textured paints, colour blocking and wallpapers, and continue the pattern in textiles, in a bold maximalist way. Consider different textured paints and paint finishes such as combing, stenciling, colour washing and graining etc.

Create new dimensions to walls with shelving, horizontally or vertically to showcase your favourite items and bring a personality into your living room. Metal, wood and painted shelves, as well as glass and shelf lighting, will add interest, atmosphere and texture. Until you get the texture just right.
